PRE - VERONA: SHAKESPEARE AND WINE

$1,999.00/person

NOTE: This program takes place in Verona. Flights should be booked into the Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE)

Enjoy the best of Verona and beyond by exploring landmarks like Juliet’s balcony, cruising Lake Garda and sampling wines characteristic of the region.

DAY 1

After arriving at the Venice Marco Polo Airport, you will be met outside the baggage claim area and transferred to the Verona city center. Following check in at the hotel, the remainder of the day is at your leisure and meals are on your own.

DAY 2

Following breakfast, you will meet a guide for a walking tour of Verona. One of the highlights will be the Arena, a first-century Roman structure that has become the city’s open-air opera house.

Verona is also known as the setting for Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” and the Juliet balcony is another favorite site that you will see. Even though there is no historical evidence that Juliet’s family lived in the house, the balcony has gained almost legendary status and lovers often leave notes on the wall below.

Following the guided walking tour, the remainder of the afternoon is at your leisure and lunch is on your own.

However, dinner is included and a guide will accompany you on the short walk to the restaurant later in the day.

DAY 3

After breakfast, you will join a guide and drive to the resort city of Sirmione on picturesque Lake Garda. The 13th-century castle Rocca Scaligera, a wonderfully preserved landmark with crenellated walls and towers, dominates the city.

Continuing on to the head of the peninsula, you will find the remains of Catullo Grotto, the largest ancient Roman villa in northern Italy. The villa’s museum contains important discoveries from on-site excavations and other settlements nearby. Based on the design of the villa, it may have hosted emperors and the most important political and military leaders of the day when they were traveling through the area.

Please note that Catullo Grotto is an archaeological site with uneven pavement and rocky paths.

Then, following lunch in Sirmione, you will board a boat and cruise around Garda Island. The sights along the way include another perspective of Catullo Grotto, the Gardone Riviera and the city of Fasano. In time, you will disembark in Bardolino to meander about on your own.

Bardolino is situated at the widest point of the lake and enjoys a mild climate in which olive trees, cypresses and vineyards flourish. It’s a beautiful setting with plenty of boutiques and architectural treasures to explore. Following free time in Bardolino, you will drive back to the hotel in Verona for the evening. Dinner will be on your own.

DAY 4

After checking out of the hotel, you will meet your tour guide and depart for Venice. Along the way, you will pause at a winery in the Valpolicella region for a tasting of its esteemed Amarone wine. Afterwards, you will drive to the Venice pier and embark the ship.

PRE - A RENAISSANCE FEAST FOR THE SENSES

$1,899.00/person

Note—this program takes place in Verona, so please arrange your arrival flight into the Verona Villafranca Airport or the Venice Marco Polo Airport.

Note—this tour involves a lot of walking, often over uneven ground.

Gain a deep understanding of Renaissance life by visiting the wonderfully preserved Renaissance cities of Sabbioneta and Mantua, exploring their architectural gems and savoring wines produced locally for centuries.

DAY 1

After arriving at the Venice or Verona airport and meeting your tour escort, you will transfer to the hotel in the city center of Verona. Check in is 3:00pm. Although every effort will be made to have your room ready beforehand, this cannot be guaranteed. If your flight arrives early in the day, you may wish to book an extra night so that your room will be available upon arrival.

The remainder of the day will be at your leisure, allowing you to comfortably settle in and explore attractions nearby. Meals will be on your own throughout the day, and there are plenty of restaurants to choose from nearby, especially on Corso di Porta Borsari, one of the main streets in the heart of the city.

This will be the first of three evenings that you will spend at the Palazzo Victoria hotel.

DAY 2

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will depart for Sabbioneta, a fortified city designed in the 16th century to emulate Roman and Greek cities of antiquity. The original, right-angle grid of streets within a star-shaped hexagon of walls still exists, as do many of the most historical, Renaissance-style buildings. Because of its single-period architecture, Sabbioneta has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and makes for a fascinating walking tour.

Then following lunch and a tasting of parmigiana-reggiano cheese nearby, you will proceed to Mantua, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you will visit the fabulous, 500-room Ducal Palace, once the residence of the noble Gonzaga family. Vespasiano Gonzaga founded Sabbioneta as his ideal Renaissance city.

Inside the palace, you will find paintings by Mantegna and Rubens and tapestries designed by Raphael. You will also visit the private study of Isabella d’Este, who married into the family and later became known as the “First Lady of the Renaissance” because of her trend-setting flair for fashion.

Later, you will stop at the Basilica of St. Andrea in Old Town and Palazzo Te, a summer palace and horse farm nearby. You will then be treated to an extraordinary welcome dinner in Mantua before returning to the Palazzo Victoria Hotel in Verona, where you will spend the evening.

DAY 3

After breakfast at the hotel, you will drive toward Franciacorta, a wine-producing region first mentioned in the writings of ancient authors such as Pliny and Virgil. Because of the favorable growing conditions, this region has continuously grown outstanding grapes for wine, as you will discover at a country estate.

During the light lunch and wine tasting that follows, you may sample the region’s famed sparkling wines or perhaps a semi-sweet Moscato d’Asti, one of Italy’s most popular wines. The estate is a beautiful, wonderfully relaxing setting not far from Lake Iseo, your next destination. Mountains surround the long, narrow lake and provide a magnificent background for you to enjoy free time before returning to the hotel for the evening.

DAY 4

After checking out of the hotel, you will head toward Valpolicella, one of the most renowned wine districts in the province. Stopping at one of the area estates, you will sample a glass of amarone, an intensely flavored dry red wine respected throughout northeastern Italy.

Then, it’s on to the pier in Venice, where you will embark the ship and begin your cruise.
