PRE: AUCKLAND OUTSKIRTS & WILD WAIHEKE

$2,299.00/person

Discover the joys of rural life in the gorgeous countryside on the outskirts of Auckland and on idyllic Waiheke Island by visiting a farm and vineyard and meeting with artisans who find the setting inspirational.

Note: Due to varying terrain, this program is not suited for guests with walking difficulties or those who utilize a wheelchair or scooter.

DAY 1

On arrival in Auckland, you will be met and transferred to your hotel where you will spend the next three evenings. Check-in is 3:00pm. Although the hotel will do everything possible to have your room ready prior to that time, it cannot be guaranteed.

The remainder of the day will be at your leisure, although a welcome drink will be served at 5pm. It will be an excellent opportunity to meet your fellow travelers in a casual setting.

Dinner will be on your own this evening.

DAY 2

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will depart for the countryside on the outskirts of Auckland. The land here is some of the country’s most fertile, making it ideal for growing fruits and vegetables and raising stock.

To provide you with an authentic understanding of the local lifestyle, our journey will take us into the picturesque countryside. During our adventure, we'll make a delightful stop for a cheese-tasting experience.

As we continue our journey, we'll head to the Vineyard Cottages, where your knowledgeable guide will personally handpick the freshest ingredients from the local producers.

Upon arriving at the venue, the warm and welcoming owner, Elle Armon-Jones, will personally guide you on an enchanting tour of the vineyard and the flourishing vegetable garden. Discover the passion and care that goes into cultivating the vines and producing the freshest vegetables.

Following the tour, you'll have the option to unwind on the verandah while lunch is prepared. As the delightful aromas fill the air, Elle will present a tasting of exquisite olive oils, each carefully crafted to perfection. Accompanied by stone-oven baked bread, this experience will add yet another layer of understanding to the intricacies of the local cuisine.

To elevate your culinary journey further, a thoughtfully curated selection of local beers and wines will be paired with the two courses.

Upon returning to Auckland, the rest of the day is yours to enjoy at your leisure. You may explore the vibrant city at your own pace, perhaps discovering its unique attractions or simply indulging in some relaxation time. Dinner will be on your own this evening.

DAY 3

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will take the ferry to Waiheke Island. Along the way, the views include such scenic highlights as Devonport, Rangitoto Island, Browns Island, and the Auckland skyline. Upon arrival at Waiheke Island, your friendly local guide will be there to greet you and embark on a captivating journey through the island's breathtaking landscapes.

Our first stop will be at the magnificent Church Bay Studio, owned by the talented artist Gabriella Lewenz. Marvel at her vivid abstract oil paintings, which exhibit a captivating blend of colors and emotions, making her studio a true artistic haven. Next, we'll visit the Waiheke Community Art Gallery, a treasure trove of local and national art. Immerse yourself in the creative brilliance of New Zealand's finest artists, as the gallery showcases a diverse range of works that embody the spirit of Waiheke.

As we continue our journey along the scenic northern route, breathtaking views of the Hauraki Gulf and the distant Coromandel Peninsula will surround us. Our destination for lunch and wine tasting is the renowned Stonyridge Vineyard, a haven of relaxation nestled amidst olive groves, vibrant vineyards, and a charming South of France ambiance. The menu is a celebration of fresh, seasonal produce, offering an array of delectable dishes, from platters to exquisite a la carte dining.

After savoring a delightful meal, we'll proceed to another local vineyard for an exceptional wine-tasting experience paired with Te Matuku Bay Oysters. Here, you'll have the opportunity to learn about the unique farming practices that make these oysters so special, as they are cultivated in a marine reserve at the remote Eastern End of Waiheke Island.

With hearts full of cherished memories, we'll make our way back to the wharf for the return ferry to Auckland.

Upon reaching Auckland, transfer you to your hotel, where you can unwind and indulge in the comfort of your accommodations. The remainder of the day is yours to enjoy at your leisure. Take this opportunity to further relax, rejuvenate, and do as you please. Dinner will be on your own this evening.

DAY 4

Following breakfast at the hotel and check out, you will begin a scenic driving tour of Auckland’s waterfront, with a stop for photos of the harbor from Bastion Point. You will also drive through residential neighborhoods in the eastern part of the city and through Parnell Village before arriving at the pier to embark on the cruise ship.

DAY 2

Check out of the hotel, leaving your excess luggage with reception. Be sure to tie the provided ribbon to your luggage, which will be transferred to the cruise ship for your embarkation on Day 4 of the land program.

After meeting your driver/guide in the hotel reception area, you will transfer to the airport for a flight over the island-studded Hauraki Gulf to the Great Barrier Island on the edge of the gulf.

Once you land, the local guide will explain what life is like on the Great Barrier Island, which has a population of just 1200 people. The early settlers were Maoris, whalers and miners seeking gold, silver and copper.

The guide will elaborate on the island’s history and geography while pointing out the differences between the rugged east coast, which is fringed with rugged cliffs and wild surf beaches, and the more sheltered western side with its deep harbours and white sandy beaches.

Following lunch, you will check into the Great Barrier Lodge or a similar hotel, where you will spend the evening. You will be free until dinner to enjoy the hotel and the surrounding area as you please.

Once the sun goes down, you will discover that there isn’t much ambient lighting on the Great Barrier Island, which makes it ideal for star-gazing. In fact, the island is one of the few places in the world that has been granted a Dark Sky Sanctuary status to safeguard its night sky conditions.

During the evening’s Good Heavens star-gazing experience, local dark sky ambassadors will point out the astronomical wonders above. Because the sky is so dark, the stars and constellations will look brighter and closer than ever. The ambassadors will also share Maori legends linked to the night sky.

NOTES:

• Baggage weight is restricted to 20 kg (44 lbs) per passenger on the flight to Great Barrier Island.

• Be sure to pack a small bag for your time at the island. Any excess will be collected when you disembark and stored at your Auckland hotel, where you will be reunited with it on Day 3.

• Star-gazing is weather dependant. If the weather doesn’t permit the experience tonight, another attempt will be made on Day 3.

DAY 3

Following an early breakfast at the lodge, you will enjoy a morning Hooked on Barrier fishing charter. The waters surrounding the Great Barrier Island are teeming with fish such as snapper, kahawai, terakihi, trevally and kingfish. All the fishing gear will be provided, and the crew will offer tips so you can increase your chances of catching fish. Be sure to look for whales and dolphins, which also frequent these waters.

Back at the wharf, the fish that have been caught will be cooked for your dinner at the lodge.

After lunch at the lodge, the afternoon will be at your leisure. You might relax at the lodge, visit the Kaitoke Hot Springs, White Cliffs or head for the beach.

DAY 4

After breakfast at the lodge, you will fly back to Auckland and begin exploring the vibrant city. You will drive along the waterfront, where you may pause for photos of the volcanic island Rangitoto, which lies just offshore, and see the beautiful views from coastal Bastian Point, which overlooks the Waitemata Harbour.

Afterwards, you will drive through Auckland Domain, the city’s oldest park to enjoy free time wandering through the Winter Gardens, which were designed in the early 1900s. The garden’s two Victorian-style greenhouses contain rare and exotic plants. The indigenous ferns growing in a sunken quarry are particularly noteworthy. Lunch will be served at the Winter Garden Pavilion Café.

You will then browse the Auckland War Memorial Museum, which houses an impressive collection of Maori and Pacific artifacts that include a carved meeting house and an impressive 85-foot-long war canoe made from a single log.

Afterwards, you will drive to the pier and embark the cruise ship.
