PRE-BALINESE BLESSINGS & CULTURAL HERITAGE SITES

Delve into the fascinating Balinese culture by visiting an array of architectural treasures such as Hindu temples, traditional villages, cultural parks and markets that reflect daily life on the island of Bali.

DAY 1 - December 23rd, 2022

After flying into the Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali, you will transfer to Hyatt Regency Sanur, Bali. A luxury beachfront resort in Bali on the main street of Sanur, the hotel is located on nine hectares of lush tropical gardens. You will be staying in a deluxe room overlooking the tranquil gardens.

Check in is 3:00pm. Although every effort will be made to have rooms available beforehand, this cannot be guaranteed. If your room is not ready when you arrive, you may temporarily store luggage at the reception desk.

The remainder of the day will be at your leisure to do as you please. You may simply settle in and enjoy the amenities of the resort hotel or see some of the local sites on your own. Meals will be on your own.

DAY 2 - December 24th, 2022

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will visit a factory that produces batik clothing, which is synonymous with Bali. Batik is the technique of dying the fabrics to create designs that typically reflect nature, although geometric patterns are also popular. It is a fascinating process, and this behind-the-scenes opportunity to see it firsthand will be eye-opening.

Continuing, you will soon arrive at the Tanah Lot Temple, a 16th-century Hindu shrine atop an outcrop of black lava that extends into the sea. The temple can only be reached at low tide. The receding sea creates a natural spout in the rock and its water is considered holy. It is quite the setting and extraordinarily photogenic.

You will become further immersed in the culture by browsing the Subak Museum, which holds a collection of Balinese agricultural items such as traditional tools for farming.

Lunch follows at local restaurant, after which you will visit Jatiluwih village, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the finest places in Bali to see lush, green terraced fields of rice. The rice is watered with a traditional irrigation system, much like the ones you may have seen in the Subak Museum.

Following this enlightening look into Balinese life, you will return to hotel for the evening. Dinner will be on your own.

DAY 3 - December 25th, 2022

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will depart for the fishing village of Kusamba. While mingling with the villagers, you will see how they use traditional tools to produce salt from the seawater-saturated sand. The salt here is high in iodine and has health benefits. However, its production is a labor-intensive dying trade, although the locals hope to preserve this sustainable cultural heritage.

You will then proceed to Goa Lawah, more commonly known as the Bat Cave Temple because the building is constructed at the entrance to a cave inhabited by countless bats. Chances are, you will see locals praying and making offerings. According to legend, a snake king wearing a crown lives inside near a river with healing waters.

Lunch will be served at local restaurant then the last visit before driving back to hotel is Celuk Village, one of the country’s primary centers for goldsmiths and silversmiths. Time will be allotted for you to browse, watch the craftsmen make beautiful jewelry and purchase jewelry if desired.

In the evening, join your fellow travelers for a lovely holiday buffet dinner featuring carved turkey in the Wantilan Courtyard of the hotel. The evening will conclude with festive sweets created by the talented pastry chef.

DAY 4 - December 26th, 2022

After breakfast and check out, you will drive to Denpasar, the capital of Bali Province. It was once the capital of the Badung Empire, controlling the southern region of Bali Island from the end of 18th century until it was conquered by the Dutch in 1906.

Your first stop will be the Bajra Sandhi Monument, which commemorates the Balinese struggle against Dutch colonialism. Designed in the shape of a Hindu bell, the monument contains dozens of detailed dioramas that depict Bali’s long history, including the introduction of Hinduism and the country’s eventual independence.

You will next visit Jro Kuta Palace, a complex of nine buildings, each with its own function. For instance, there is a hall constructed as a fortress, a living room built for the king and a room for worship. Upon arriving, you will be served a welcome drink then you will explore the Palace and surrounding.

Continuing, you will stop at the Badung Market, a vibrant hub of activity that never closes. As you browse the stalls, you will find every type of merchandise imaginable, including local fabric, exotic seafood and garden-fresh produce. The experience will leave you with a lasting impression of Bali before you head for the port to embark the cruise ship.

OVERLAND - JOYOUS JAVA - 2024

Gain insight into Java’s fascinating history and culture by visiting the extraordinary temple complexes at Borobudur and Prambanan, watching the art of Kris-making and exploring both Yogyakarta and Surabaya.

Note: Guests travelling with Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines should read further below for airline stipulations with regards to bringing this equipment on tour. This program is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties or for those who utilize a wheelchair or scooter.

DAY 1 – March 9, 2024

After disembarking the cruise ship, you will transfer to the Denpasar Airport and fly to Yogyakarta City in Java. Following lunch, you will drive to the 9th-century Prambanan temple compounds, a collection of 240 temples so magnificent that UNESCO declared them a World Heritage site. They are dedicated to the Trimurti, a concept of Hinduism whereby Brahma is the Creator, Vishnu is the Preserver and Shiva is the Destroyer.

Later in the afternoon, you will check into the Hotel Tentrem (or a similar hotel), where you will enjoy dinner and a relaxing evening.

DAY 2 – March 10, 2024

Setting out well before sunrise, drive to the stunning temple complex at Borobudur, the world’s largest Buddhist monument. This UNESCO World Heritage site consists of six square terraces topped by three circular ones. Built with more than 2 million stone blocks and adorned with thousands of relief panels and hundreds of Buddha statues, it is exquisite beyond comparison.

Ample time will be dedicated to exploring this incredible Buddhist structure before visiting a Kris maker. Listed by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of Intangible Heritage of Humanity, the Kris is an asymmetrical dagger with distinctive blade patterning achieved through alternating laminations of iron. It can take a month to forge a single piece.

Kris have been produced in Indonesia for centuries, but nowhere is the art so embedded in the culture as in Central Java. Kris are used for display, weapons, as talismans with magical powers, accessories for ceremonial dress, indicators of social status and symbols of heroism. Kris-makers do more than forge the weapon, they ritualistically infuse the blade with mystical powers. Consequently, Kris are considered almost alive because they may be vessels of spirits, either good or evil.

After visiting the Kris-Maker, you can relax at the hotel before checking out. You will then board a train at the Yogyakarta station. Dinner will be served during the train ride to Surabaya.

Upon arrival in Surabaya, you will then be transferred directly to the Hotel Majapahit Surabaya (or a similar hotel) for the evening.

DAY 3 – March 11, 2024

Following breakfast at the hotel and check-out, you will begin an enlightening driving tour of Surabaya. While passing the Pasar Pabean market in Old Town, you will surely notice that the merchandise isn’t just Javanese. Many of the vendors are from China, India and Malaysia and their goods appeal to those audiences.

In time, you will pause at Arabic Square, which contains the tomb of Sunan Ampel, the Wali Sanga saint that brought Islam to Indonesia in the 15th century. Arabic Square is now a center for Islamic study and a vibrant for Muslims. While walking about the square, you will pass through the pilgrim’s market and see the centuries-old Ampel mosque.

Afterwards, you will proceed to the port and re-embark the cruise ship.

OVERLAND - THE INSIDER'S JAVA - 2024

Experience Java like an insider by exploring fascinating places that most visitors rarely see, including Mount Bromo at sunrise.

Special Note: Any guests travelling with Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines should read further below for airline stipulations with regards to bringing this equipment on tour.

DAY 1

After disembarking the ship in Benoa, you will transfer to the airport in Denpasar and fly to the city of Surabaya in Java. Upon landing at the Juanda International Airport, you will transfer to the Plataran Bromo hotel, stopping along the way for lunch.

Tucked away in the highlands of East Java, Plataran Bromo offers sublime views overlooking a patchwork of agricultural plantations woven into the surrounding hillsides. The hotel is conveniently located at the gateway of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park – a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You will have time to settle in and freshen up at the hotel before exploring taking part in a sacred Bromo experience.

Discover one of the unique worship rituals that takes place on the slopes of Mount Bromo itself. Learn the fascinating history of Mount Bromo and its Tengger tribe, on a trip to a sacred cave hidden away at the foot of the mountain, where a holy fountain and altar are located. At this spot, the Tenggerese people place offerings on the altar, perform ablutions with holy water in a ceremony known as tirto aji, and pray to the ancient gods for a prosperous and fertile future. The site is also a spiritually potent destination for meditation.

Return back to your hotel for dinner.

DAY 2

After waking up about 3am, you will travel by private 4WD jeep to the rim of Mount Penanjakan, which soars more than 9,000 feet above sea level. From there, you will watch the sunrise over the active volcano Mount Bromo. At 2,329 meters above sea level, Mount Bromo is one of the most iconic sights in Java, standing as the centerpiece of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. You can expect it to be a glorious experience as the surrounding countryside takes on an almost mystical appearance as the sunlight slowly illuminates it.

In the background, you will see Mount Semeru, another active volcano with the distinction of being the highest point in Java. Although its eruptions are small, they are almost constant. Chances are, you will see plumes of ash rising from the volcano and perhaps even the glow from lava flows inching down the mountainside.

After sunrise, you will descend the steep slopes of Mount Penanjakan, cross a plain known as the Sea of Sand and arrive at a verdant savannah. It is an idyllic setting, where you can sit on a picnic blanket and enjoy an al fresco breakfast. You will be surrounded by the magical landscape of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.

Once you finish breakfast, you will drive back to Mount Bromo for a short walk of easy to medium difficulty that will take you to the base of the mountain. As an option at an additional cost, you might cross the Sea of Sand on horseback.

Upon returning to the hotel, you will check-out and transfer to Surabaya City. Upon arrival the remainder of the day is at your leisure with lunch and dinner on own.

DAY 3

After breakfast and checkout, take a drive past Pasar Pabean, a large multi-ethnic old-town market selling everything from fresh and dried fish and meat as well as a variety of vegetables, fruits and spices.

Visit the close-by Arabic Square containing the tomb of Sunan Ampel, one of the saints who brought Islam to Indonesia in the Fifteenth century. Majaphit, as Indonesia was then called, was an archipelago empire and the introduction of Islam brought with it many people from the Arabian countries. Arabic Square is now a center for Islamic study and a vibrant oasis of Muslim people, culture, architecture and religious worship. Here you will have the opportunity to walk through Pilgrim’s Market and view the ancient Ampel Mosque, the spiritual and cultural center of the Square. You will surely feel as if you are stepping back in time when you explore this historic quarter.

Afterwards, proceed to the port to re-embark the ship.

POST-BALINESE BLESSINGS & CULTURAL HERITAGE SITES

Delve into the fascinating Balinese culture by visiting an array of architectural treasures such as Hindu temples, traditional villages, cultural parks and markets that reflect daily life on the island of Bali.

DAY 1

After disembarking the ship, you will be met by your guide before starting out for the drive to Denpasar, the capital of Bali Province.

Proceed to Bali and your luxury beachfront resort in Sanur. The hotel is located on nine hectares of lush tropical gardens and your deluxe room will overlook these tranquil gardens.

Lunch and dinner will be on your own.

DAY 2

DAY 3

In the evening, the group will enjoy a set menu dinner at the hotel.

DAY 4

Following breakfast, you will check out of the hotel and transfer to Ngurah Rai International Airport based on your flight details. Hotel check out time is at 12:00pm. Should guests have a late flight, luggage storage is available at the hotel until your transfer time.

POST: BREATHTAKING BALI

Delve into the fascinating Balinese culture by visiting an array of architectural treasures such as Hindu temples, traditional villages, cultural parks and markets that reflect daily life on the island of Bali.

DAY 1

After disembarking the ship in Benoa, meet your guide and drive to Denpasar, the capital of Bali Province.

Continuing, you will stop in Badung Market, a vibrant hub of activity that never closes. As you browse the stalls, you will find every type of merchandise imaginable, including batik textiles, exotic seafood and garden-fresh produce. The experience will leave you with a lasting impression of Bali.

Your next visit will be Bali Museum, strategically located in the heart of town, Denpasar City. Next, on the north side visit the glorious temple of Jagatnatha temple, a Hindu Kahyangan Temple.

Before entering the temple, you will be dressed in Balinese outfit (sarong + headband + sash for Male and sarong + sash for women). We will give you the offering and incense for praying, after praying you will get holly water from Priest as a blessing.

Last stop before heading to hotel is Inna Bali Heritage Hotel for a coffee break and enjoy the local snack. The hotel ideally located in the main part of the city centre of Denpasar, the capital city of BALI – Indonesia. Inna Bali Hotel Denpasar is a 3-star heritage hotel was built in 1927 by the Airlines Shipping Netherlands with the name BALI HOTEL and it is the first international class hotel in Bali, where of some world leaders such as Queen Elizabeth, Charlie Chaplin, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Ir Soekarno until Megawati and other figures stayed in this hotel and enjoy the room number 77. DAY 2

You will proceed to Batuan Temple is a local Balinese Hindu temple looked after by the local residents of Batuan countryside. The temple is designed very beautifully, full of Balinese ornaments and the roof temple building is made from the fibre of chromatic black palm tree. It is strategically located beside the main road from Denpasar to Ubud. Next you will go to Bali Bird Park to visit, and your lunch will be served at Bali Bird Park.

After lunch then drive back to hotel. Along the way you will see Balinese preparing for the New Year celebration where Balinese people create large statues of demons and other evil creatures out of bamboo and paper. These statues are known as ogoh-ogoh. Many of the ogoh-ogoh seen in parades are created by youth groups from Balinese villages. The most impressive ogoh-ogoh are usually created by Balinese artists. After the ogoh-ogoh are created, they are taken to a large street parade for everyone to see. It is believed that the ogoh-ogoh will absorb the negative energy of the spectators and ward off evil spirits. After the parade, the ogoh-ogoh are burned in a large public bonfire. In addition to warding off evil and purifying the Balinese people, the bonfire is also believed to satisfy Batara Kala, the God of the underworld.

Day 3 (Day of Silence on Hindu New Year)

Following breakfast at the hotel.

On Hindu New Year’s Day, Hindus participate in Nyepi rituals.

The first aspect of the Nyepi ritual is known as Amati Geni. Amati Geni declares that no fire or light can be used on Bali during Hari Raya Nyepi. Amati Geni also restricts the use of electricity.

The second aspect of the Nyepi ritual is Amati Karya. According to Amati Karya, no one in Bali may work during Hari Raya Nyepi. The third aspect of the Nyepi rituals, Amati Lelunganan, declares that no one may travel during Hari Raya Nyepi. The final aspect of the Nyepi rituals is Amati Lelanguan. Amati Lelanguan declares that every person in Bali must fast during Hari Raya Nyepi. Amati Lelanguan also requires people in Bali to refrain from entertainment.

During the Day of Silence, Bali’s people are expected to reflect on their actions over the past year. Many Balinese people will take this as an opportunity to rest and think of ways to improve themselves throughout the upcoming year. To ensure that all aspects of the Nyepi rituals are followed, Nyepi policemen patrol the island of Bali. Everyone on Bali must abide by the Nyepi rituals. Because of this, the Bali airport closes for the day and all visitors stay indoors or leave the island.

The Day of Silence is a tradition that dates back to some of the earliest years in Balinese history. Balinese people believe that remaining silent for a full day after loud celebrations will trick evil spirits into thinking that the island of Bali is uninhabited. According to this idea, the spirits will leave the island alone since their ultimate goal is to torment humans.
