Spend a full day exploring the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Borobudur – the world’s largest Buddhist temple – and visiting the 9th-century Hindu temple compound Prambanan. These are but a few of the experiences that will leave lasting memories.
Note: Guests travelling with Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines should read further below for airline stipulations with regards to bringing this equipment on tour.
DAY 1
After disembarking the cruise ship, you will transfer to Yogyakarta City. Listed by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of Intangible Heritage of Humanity, the kris is an asymmetrical dagger with distinctive blade patterning achieved through alternating laminations of iron. It can take a month to forge a single piece.
Kris have been produced in Indonesia for centuries, but nowhere is the art so embedded in the culture as in Central Java. Kris are used for display, weapons, as talismans with magical powers, accessories for ceremonial dress, and indicators of social status and symbols of heroism. Kris-makers do more than forge the weapon, they ritualistically infuse the blade with mystical powers. Consequently, Kris are considered almost alive because they may be vessels of spirits, either good or evil.
Afterward, you will transfer to Hotel Tentrem Yogyakarta for check-in. Dinner will be served in the stunningly beautiful gardens of the d’Omah Hotel in Yogyakarta. You will welcomed by the esteemed Warwick Purser, an Australian who became Indonesian by presidential decree and is legendary for his countless adventures and entrepreneurial skills, as well as his unwavering commitment to community development.
You will be regaled with tales of his amazingly colorful life while savoring a procession of 15 different and delectable dishes in what can only be described as a rijstaffel feast. Rijstaffel is among Indonesia’s most revered culinary exports. Literally meaning “rice table,” it features an array of delights that typically include satay, gado gado salad, beef rendang and any number of fish, meat and vegetable dishes, along with obligatory bowls of fragrant rice plus sauces and fiery sambals. It is popular worldwide, especially in Holland, where Dutch colonial travelers brought it back. As well as providing an unforgettable gourmet occasion, this dinner allows you to become familiar with the life of a truly extraordinary man.
DAY 2
This morning, you will depart from Yogyakarta and drive to the stunning temple complex at Borobudur, one of Southeast Asia’s most impressive sites and the largest single Buddhist monument in the world. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the monument consists of six square terraces topped by three circular ones.
Two million stone blocks were required to build the temple and with at least 2,500 relief panels and more than 500 Buddha statues, it is exquisite beyond comparison. Ample time will be dedicated to exploring this incredible Buddhist structure.
Following lunch at the Stupa Restaurant, you will visit the 9th-century Hindu temple compound of Prambanan. This impressive collection of temples is dedicated to the Trimurti, a concept of Hinduism whereby Brahma is the Creator, Vishnu is the Preserver and Shiva is the Destroyer, which is often referred to as the Great Trinity or Hindu Triad. Identifiable by its towering and pointed architectural design, Prambanan is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest and perhaps the finest Hindu temple complex in the country.
After visiting you will return to the hotel for dinner and to spend another delightful evening.
DAY 3
After check out from the hotel, you will proceed to Yogyakarta International Airport, fly to Bali and re-join the cruise ship.
