Discover that to survive in the dry soil, the vines are planted in funnel-shaped craters and the ground covered with porous volcanic granules to retain moisture. Sample a few of the resulting dry to semi-sweet to sweet wines and appreciate this unique method of cultivation and the unexpected bounty of this seemingly sterile land.

Learn of its multiple medicinal applications and importance as an ingredient in cosmetics, soap, shampoo and even beverages. Recognize that Lanzarote deserves global accolades for its little-known wines on this visit to two wineries, where you’ll sample their most celebrated vintages. Discover that due to the island’s harsh environment, vintners have had to devise ingenious methods to grow their vines, such as planting them in funnel-shaped craters and covering the ground with porous volcanic granules to retain moisture. Visit Bodega Suarez, a whitewashed winery that combines traditional techniques with modern technology, and taste its intriguing wines. Unleash your inner oenophile in Rubicon winery, one of the oldest winery in the Canary Islands, where award-wining wines you’ll sample might include a fruity red with violet tones and a lovely, amber-colored muscat. Set in La Geria and surrounded by centenarian eucalyptuses, the winery stands solemnly overlooking the National Park of Timanfaya.
Along the tour, stop at the Monument to Fertility, an avant-garde piece of art used by César Manrique to pay his very own tribute to the island. Learn how even the hardest environment can offer authentic treasures to those who are able to work through adversities.
