A Walking Tour of Aalborg (AAL-001)

  • Port:Aalborg, Denmark
  • Tour Length:Half-Day (Approximately 3 hours)
  • Visit the 1624 Dutch Renaissance home of Jens Bang, famously at odds with the local authorities.
  • Hear the bells of St. Budolf Cathedral, chiming hourly with an ever-changing melody.
  • Admire elaborate frescoes at the Monastery of the Holy Ghost, established 1431.
  • Encounter a medieval fortress so un-fortresslike, they soon turned it into an office building.

On an unhurried stroll through Aalborg, discover centuries-old treasures that include its castle and monastery, and Scandinavia’s largest historic mansion. One thing’s for sure, this town has history. Just minutes from the pier, you’ll confront the sizable façade of Jens Bang’s residence – all five magnificent stories of it. Squint up at the gables to spot the sculpture of its wealthy 17th-century builder sticking his tongue out at town hall after losing his shot at public office. After that show of grandiosity, the austere Gothic demeanor of Aalborg’s cathedral will seem hushed (except for when its bells reverberate over the city every hour). Touring the town’s 15th-century monastery, you’ll be inside Denmark’s oldest social institution – having had long stints as a priory, a hospital, a school, and an old-folks home. Then there’s half-timbered Aalborghus Castle. Don’t let the name fool you: its builders so botched the whole “castle” idea that it looks like anything but a formidable bastion.

Helpful Hints
  • Wear weather-appropriate layered clothing.
  • Flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
  • Bring a bottle of water, hat, sunglasses and sunscreen as needed.
Please Note
This tour includes 3 hours of moderate walking, at times including cobblestone surfaces, steps and thresholds. While available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible chair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them, not all venues are fully wheelchair accessible. The tour is not recommended for those with walking difficulties. Tour sequence may vary.

The Viking Experience (AAL-002)

  • Port:Aalborg, Denmark
  • Tour Length:Half-Day (Approximately 2 hours)
  • Visit one of the most significant Viking sites in Scandianavia, the buried village of Lindholm Hoje.
  • Learn how the ancients lived, worked, cooked and traded at imaginative Lindholm Hoje Museum.
  • Take a panoramic spin through Aalborg, passing architectural landmarks like Aalborghus Castle.
  • Listen for the hourly bells of St. Budolf Cathedral, chiming with an ever-changing melody.

Explore a fabulously-preserved Viking community and burial ground, then browse a museum that tells a vivid story of how they lived. Drive through Aalborg, founded more than 1,000 years ago by the Viking people, and cross the narrow Limfjord and rolling hills to visit the famous archaeological site at Lindholm Hoje. Completely buried by drifting sand around the year 1000, this entire Viking community was hidden for centuries before being unearthed – in extraordinarily well-preserved form. You’ll walk into a veritable time capsule that includes the remains of houses, fences, and fields littered with hundreds of ancient stone markers and graves. Reconstructions and 3D animations at the adjacent Lindholm Hoje Museum reveal how these early inhabitants kept livestock, cultivated crops, built their homes and cooked their meals. You’ll also learn of the mysterious fire that struck a nearby farm more than 2000 years ago – and the efforts modern forensic scientists have used to decode the inferno’s true explanation.

Helpful Hints
  • Wear weather-appropriate layered clothing.
  • Flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
  • Bring a bottle of water, hat, sunglasses and sunscreen as needed.
Please Note
This tour includes 30 minutes of moderate walking, including hilly, rocky and uneven surfaces. While available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible chair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them, not all areas visited are wheelchair accessible. Those with walking difficulties are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina before participating. Tour sequence may vary.

Skagen, the Top of Denmark (AAL-003)

  • Port:Aalborg, Denmark
  • Tour Length:Full-Day (Approximately 7 hours)
  • Settle in for a scenic 90-minute coach journey to the far northern tip of idyllic Jutland peninsula.
  • Take in the light-inspired paintings at Skagens Museum, idealizing 1870-1930 life in this artists’ colony.
  • Stand at the exact point where two great seas meet at Grenen; put a foot in each’s water if you dare.
  • Visit a 14th-century church that’s been swallowed nearly whole by the migrating sands it was built on.
  • Savor a traditional Danish lunch at midday.

Travel to sandy Skagen in Denmark’s northernmost reaches, where seas meet, the light inspires, and art thrives. This picturesque city lies 90 minutes’ drive from Aalborg, in the North Jutland landscape known for its white beaches and coastal cliffs, flowery heathlands and deep beech forests. But more than anything, the locale is revered for the marvelous quality of its light. Artists have been drawn here for generations, hoping to capture this luminous environment on canvas. Many of their best (and most romantic) attempts are displayed in the Skagens Museum, founded to assemble and preserve works painted during the peak of Skagen’s prominence as an artists’ colony. Following a traditional Danish lunch, you’ll take a trolley ride out to the absolute tip of Denmark at Grenen, where the Baltic and North Sea meet, and stop for a photo opp at the famous Buried Church – sitting atop Northern Europe’s largest sand dune. Well, not quite atop anymore.
